The North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium meeting

The North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium consists of a number of both non-governmental and governmental organizations and individuals in the United States and Canada who work to study and conserve the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whales, of which there are approximately 500 individuals remaining. The website (www.narwc.org) currently maintained by the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts, was created to provide education to the public on right whale research endeavors and conservation strategies. Some of the highlights that the Consortium offers include access to a right whale identification catalogue, blog archives, and up-to-the-minute news on special whale issues.

One of the most invaluable resources to the management and conservation of the species is the Annual Meeting of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium. This is the only annual event during which all stakeholders have the opportunity to gather and exchange ideas and information. The next annual meeting of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium will be held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts on November 5-6, 2014. Two days of research, management, conservation, and education presentations (both oral and poster) are planned.”

    Ulsan Whale Festival

the Ulsan Whale Festival has two events which showcase Ulsan???s cultural heritage and whaling traditions. One of these events is the prehistoric re-enactment called Madangnori. Actors dressed as prehistoric folk perform choreographed routines demonstrating courtship and hunting rituals.

Surrounded by straw huts, the men and women spin, jump, and roll while clad in furs and painted for the ceremony. All the while, a shaman directs the proceedings???shaking the skull on his staff as he shouts commands for the tribe to obey.

Suddenly, the dance stops and warriors and women alike stream to the river; a path through the crowd opens and then closes as people crowd behind them. On the river, a whale rounds the bend and spouts a stream of water from its blowhole. The hunt is on.

From their hiding spots among the reeds, two canoes of hunters move to intercept the whale. They close the distance and pull alongside it, one hunter jabbing his spear at its side. The beast wounded, he climbs on top and buries the spear in its back. His companions raise their weapons and cheer; a successful hunt!

After the excitement of the hunt, the dance routine carries on for a bit more.

    Whale Watchers Wanted June 29

The mammals have begun their annual northerly migration and towards the end of June to early July are traditionally considered the best times of year to spot them.

ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia) is asking locals to sign-up for its nation-wide whale count as soon as possible.

This allows the group to ensure all sighting locations are covered.

From Seal Rocks up to Forster, the Great Lakes has some of the best viewing areas for whales and ORRCA is hoping local marine lovers will take to some of these locations on Sunday June 29 between dawn and dusk.

Members of the public are invited to head to their nearest headland or favourite ocean viewing spot to participate in the census.

The Great Lakes region is well renowned for its whale watching opportunities.
ORRCA president Ronny Ling said from picnic rugs to stationed boats in the water ??? volunteers all over Australia will be gathering data for important research.

And at the end of the census, ORRCA will pass the information and data on to other advocacy groups, government bodies and researchers.
